Day 4: Dozmat to Szentpéterfa

22 Kilometers (Approx.)

Early to rise and a quick breakfast to start our day. We were on the road by 6:30 with a quick pace. Some unexpected shade along some of the paths and some wooded areas provided comfortable temperatures which allowed us to click off some kilometers. We had done 13k before 9:00. We passed through Pornóapáti and, of course, found everything closed. It’s Monday and like many European countries most things are closed on Mondays. We trekked on for another hour until we arrived at Bildein. We found a store called Nah und Frische (Close and Fresh). We were able to replenish our food stores, grab some lunch and cool beverage. We also took a bit of a break there while we waited for some walkers to catch up. After an hour…..we pressed on for the finish. We passed by Lendl’s, a local bakerei and kaffeshop but of course, it’s Monday. It was closed. I (Ed) was crushed. We kept walking until we reached the Hungarian border (we cross back and forth between Austria and Hungary several times) where we were greeted by armed guards. Eye opener! We arrived at our destination town and the “Hospitalero” for our place spotted us on the street and waved us down (around noon!) After cleaning and resting, we enjoyed a traditional dinner of Goulash with Palacsinta (crepes) for dessert.

*I (Joan) want to mention daybreak comes around 4:30 a.m., a bit crazy, but it is allowing us to leave early as the temperatures rise to over 90 degrees. The other thing is that we are finding the markings and trail notes very good although others in our group and previous groups says the marking are missing and hard to navigate.
