Day 17: Postojna to Gornja Košana

20 Kilometers (Take That, Cue Sheet)

A slow start to our day. We “slept in” and left just before 7:00 a.m. Found proper coffee at the Time Out Cafe and then hit the road. Pretty uneventful walk early on. Our highlight, if you will, was our escort dog who walked with us for maybe four kilometers.  Gentle countryside and we ticked off some k’s before we stopped for coffee again but even though we asked for espresso twice, for some reason they didn’t bring us any so we moved on a few meters and found a shaded spot for a rest and some nurishment. Again, a dog (this time we named him brown) joined our walk for three or four kilometers before he turned back.   I previewed the route map and cue sheet last night and again they did not match up and so the decision was made to follow another path and off we went through the woods on a marked path. I was leading when I startled two large deer, but for some reason, Ed and Maxine, 25 meters behind, only saw one. It was a nice forest path with beautiful views of the rolling hills.  Our track came to a gravel road and we could hear the trains on the track and knew we needed to cross.  We found a path across but it ended so we walked beside the tracks.  We came to a narrow section with rock sides and decided we needed to run for it before another train passed and off we went for about 100 meters. We made it! Our hearts were beating with adrenaline, and soon after we  saw a road off to the left hand side and down we went.  It was a quiet road and soon we were within a kilometer of our destination and found a store where we got ice cream, yogurt, and fruit for a proper lunch. Soon after we arrived at a lovely B&B run by our most gracious host, Borut. We had a relaxing afternoon and then a superb dinner of barley soup, fresh garden tomatoes, homemade gnocchi, and finished off with a special cake make by the owner’s wife.
